Pregnancy and abortion - fully updated

Dr Mark Houghton, Dr Esther Luthy and Christine Fidler

Pregnancy and abortion - fully updated is dedicated:  'To pregnant women and their nearest'.  That may not be you.  But how would you respond to a woman facing an unintended pregnancy, particularly if she shared with you that she is considering an abortion?   More fundamentally, would you have any understanding of where she is coming from?

Maybe you engaged with the 2018 Referendum debate here in Ireland, or maybe not.  Time has moved on, but the implications of the vote haven’t gone away.  This book is the perfect aid to help us all to navigate this particular 'new normal'.

Uninformed choices in moments of crisis often lead to regret.  This compassionate, comprehensive and clear guide to decision making in pregnancy is an invaluable aid to informed choice.  Dr T Stammers, FRCGP, a GP for 30 years

Abortion having been legal there for many years, Britain has much to teach us in this regard,.  The authors are a team of Christian medical professionals in Britain.  They include men and women, and include an experienced female pregnancy counsellor.

In Pregnancy and abortion - fully updated the authors explain that most women who choose abortion believe that they have no other choice.  So they tease that out, helping a woman to journey to a decision that is based not on fear, but on information.  A simple visual tool helps her to explore her own situation, and to consider that she has options – parenting, adoption and abortion.  Also addressed are the place of the father, when the woman is very young, and possible disability.  Parenting and adoption are addressed in less detail, as they are well covered elsewhere.  Then they share research into the short and long term after effects of abortion, including some research conclusions which I found startling.

It is essential that women and their partners are adequately informed about the possible effects of abortion on them and on follow-on pregnancies.  Prof John Wyatt, Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, London.

I believe that this book is a must for those in any sort of pastoral care, whether formal or informal, for that woman could be anyone’s acquaintance.  It could also be given with confidence to any neighbour or colleague in crisis, for it is not written to judge or blame.
